Queen Jadwiga of Poland, is the patron saint of St. Hedwig's Church.
St. Hedwig was of Polish, Hungarian, Bosnian, and French ancestry and spoke six languages. She was known for her piety and charity, especially for the poor and the sick.
She was responsible for the endowment of Jagiellonian University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, through the sale of her jewels.
She entered an arranged marriage with the Duke of Lithuania and helped in the Christian conversion of that country mostly through her good example and charity.
The future St. John Paul II often prayed at her tomb in Wawel Cathedral and was elected Pope on October 16, the date of her coronation, and the Feast Day also of another St. Hedwig of Silesia, her namesake. Queen Jadwiga (St. Hedwig) feast day is June 8th.
